The Need for Dietary Change

Brooke and I watched an amazing documentary today. A film that should be required in every home. Forks over Knives. Unbelievable documentation, both clinical and scientific, on the impact of processed foods, animal proteins, dairy, and processed sugars on the growth of obesity and disease in the United States.

Especially poignant to me as there is a clear correlation to the increase and epidemic of all type of cancers over the last 40+ years. Sitting with a friend of mine last night who is an oncologist in urology he told me that the fastest growing demographic for all types of cancers were people in their 40’s and early 50’s. He said it is well known in the medical community but not discussed much in the public discourse. Why not??? He said there is much debate over the causes, cell phones, lifestyle, increased chemicals and radiation, etc. But when you watch Forks over Knives, and I really hope you do, it is pretty clear and compelling that if we address our diets, and the way we grow and process food, we would have a massive impact on a major contributor of diseases like cancer.

Hard to hear. Although I have been active and fit, I have known for a long time that I could increase my plant based intake, lower my consumption of animal protein, and reduce dairy. Brooke has patiently been trying to make that case to me for years. But I, like many in this country, and now many parts of the world eating a western diet of meat, dairy, fried foods, and processed corn fructose, have not taken heed.

Sobering for me to hear a leading researcher on cancer say that from his 40+ years experience only 1-3% of cancers are gene related. I am on my way to surgically remove  my cancer. That may well prove to be the easiest part…changing my dietary behaviors is going to be equally important. It is not going to be easy for me, years of patterned behavior are not going to change easily. I love pizza, burgers, and a host of other foods….bacon, are you kidding me! But if you watch this film, and there are countless others, as well as read up on a growing body of research it is going to get harder and harder to deny the link between our foods and our diseases. I had to get cancer to take notice and listen. What is it going to take for the rest of our society to make the change? What is it going to take for you?

Fear of the pain blinds us to the goal of healing. Only by seeing our problems clearly and experiencing them can we do something about them.

  1. Food is a big key in human health , it is extremely sad in 2013 we need to be so concern of the food we buy and not to be able to trust the FDA . I turn my self vegan ( almost 80% raw) the past years , It was hard the few months but it get easier, I spend a lots of time in my kitchen , my kids think I even sleep there it that room , I have a csa farm share. And I love it I make pretty much everything from scratch almond milk ,mayo ,mustard jelly and I do a lots of fermentation you name it . If you don’t know where to start please email me I already email Brooke few week ago I would love to help, food is the keys of recovery , Doctor or surgeon didn’t really study the nutrition they go straight with medication

  2. Hey there! My husband was having some health issues a year and a half ago, so we went to a healthy cooking class at Whole Foods Market. We thought it was going to promote eating lean meats and vegetarian meals, but it promoted a plant-based diet. We watched Forks Over Knives (like 3 times!) after this and decided to transition our diet. It was a challenge at first, but it got easier and tastier over time. It really is doable! And once you get used to it, it’s great! We prefer eating this way now and would never even think about going back to our old ways. Good luck with your transition and with your surgery. Celeste 🙂
